One of the hardest parts of running a business is setting the prices for your products or services. Many businesses make the mistake of setting their prices too high, too low, or without any real thought. The key to effective pricing strategies is to focus on the value.

Value based pricing is what occurs when you truly consider the real worth of a product or service – as opposed to focusing on offering the lowest price or making the most money.

Avoid Prices Based on Competition

When you focus on beating your competitor’s prices, you end up in a bidding war to see who can get to zero the fastest. No wins, everyone loses, especially the customers and clients. They do not end up with a quality service, due to businesses cutting corners and doing everything they can to offer the lowest price.

Underselling your product or service is going to get you nowhere fast. You cannot expect to continue to cover costs and keep your business afloat, by constantly cutting costs and cutting corners.

Selling Too High or Too Low

There is also no guarantee that consumers will automatically choose the product or service that is offered at the lowest price. In fact, more often than not, if presented with three price points for a similar product – most consumers will choose the price in the middle.

The given impression is that the cheapest item may not be as effective at whatever solution it provides, while the most expensive is likely over priced, which leaves the majority of consumers to assume the middle price provides the best value.

 Base Your Prices on Real Value

Instead of worrying too much about your competition, focus on your own goals and offering your clients that best service or product that you can. Base your prices on the real value that your clients will get. If your product or service really provides the solution for the problem it is being used for, people will pay a fair price.

Value based pricing is set on the actual value that you perceive. As you come up with a price, always pause and consider if you would be willing to pay that much for the service or product that you are promoting.

 Determining the Worth of Your Product or Service

The concept of value based pricing should be applied to all of your products or services. To do this, you need to consider what goes into making your product or service. Look at the costs of production, creation, or the amount of time spent developing your product.

Remember to avoid under selling your product or choosing a price that is too high – both of which will cut off a portion of your potential market base.

Let Customers Test the Waters

If you think that your prices are too high, compared to your competitors, but feel that they are fairly based on the real value that they provide – let your customers funnel through. The consumers that can see the actual value your product or service provides will come back around to you.

Listen to any feedback that you get from customers. Consider adding a feedback form when customers complete a purchase online or by sending out an email after fulfilling a contract or completing a service.

If the majority of your clients exclaim about the value that they are getting, perhaps your pricing was a little low. On the other hand, if you see a steady stream of comments about the high costs, then you may have set your sights too high. Pay attention to what your clients or customers have to say about your pricing and any other details that you could use to improve your products or services.

Value based pricing is about setting a fair price based on the real worth and value of your products or services. Take your time when setting prices. Do not focus too much on your competition’s prices. Listen to what your clients have to say about your pricing.

Keep these suggestions in mind, every time that you need to come up with the price of an item. These are simple concepts that every business can benefit from. The Social Media 80/20 Rule

Having a good strategy will allow you to make the best use of social media in building web presence. There are many ways to ensure you have a solid plan in place, but I generally try to stick to an 80/20 rule of social media posting (from Michael Port’s book BOOK YOURSELF SOLID). Dividing social media posts into 2 separate categories, you can make sure that you are not constantly bombarding your followers with sales pitches.

The 80/20 rule works as follows:

80% of the time, the goal of your social media posts is to tell stories, entertain, inform, and educate your followers. Those posts should be useful or entertaining to the market that you are targeting.

The remaining 20% of your social media posts can be used to offer products and services. These offers should be real solutions for real problems. Focus on solutions for your target audience. How can they benefit from using your products or services? What is the value of your proposed offers? Stick to honest facts about why they should choose your business.

It may help to plan out your posts for the week, to ensure you are generally following the 80/20 rule. If you have 5 Facebook posts for the week, make sure that 4 of them revolve around topics that your core audience will find interesting and be more likely to re-share, retweet, or pass on to their friends or family.

The way that you use each social media platform will vary, as they each have their own set up and general demographics. Look over the various ways that you can adjust your plan to each specific social media platform.

Facebook

Create a Facebook page that is just for your business, instead of relying on your personal Facebook account. You should post at least twice per week, using a combination of text with images or video. If you have a blog on your business website, set it up to auto-post to Facebook when a new blog article is released.

Twitter

With Twitter, you should also create a Twitter account for business use. Twitter is intended for short info blasts and people consume information on Twitter much more rapidly, so try to post at least 3 time per week or more. You will have a 140 character limit to the length of your tweets, which means that you will have to keep your message short and concise. You can also set your blog to auto-post to Twitter.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is geared towards professionals and peer to peer to networking. With LinkedIn, you can make business connections and also get honest feedback from clients. Brand your page and try to actively engage in group discussions. Ask your satisfied customers for testimonials that you can then use in your promotions.

Are you doing everything you can to increase your web presence? There are many different factors that determine search engine rankings. Search engines will look at the relevance of the content, the proper usage of keywords, the number of back-links, and also how fresh the content is. So is your website dead or alive? If you feel that you are not getting the results you would like from your website, you need to consider this question.

While having a blog section on your website is beneficial, you also need to ensure that you update it regularly – by posting new articles. When it comes to a dead site versus a live site, search engines give priority to a live site. What good is a blog, if it can no longer help your customers or your website traffic? Old Content versus Relevant Content

One of the criteria used by major search engines, such as Google or Bing, is how fresh the content on a web page is. For example, when a search result comes down to two separate web pages that are equally relevant to a search term, one that is several months old and one that was posted a week ago, the newer post would receive a higher ranking.

Outdated material is a major no-no. If you have a blog and the last post was a year ago, that sends a negative message to both your potential customers and Google. A couple of the main purposes of having a blog is to keep your customers informed and to remain relevant in search engines.

When a visitor can see that your last post was quite some time ago, they may not feel that your business is actively engaging with customers or offering beneficial information. They may even wonder if you are still in business. It is kind of like driving past a store and seeing a “closed” sign on the door, in the middle of the day.

Basically, newer content is going to be more relevant in search engine results than older content.

The Benefits of an Active Blog

There are several major benefits of keeping your blog active. When you post regularly, you are continuing to provide your customers with helpful information. You can increase the number of backlinks to your website, start building trust between you and your clients, and reach more people. Here is an overview of the main benefits of active blogging:

  • Increase your web presence
  • Build customer loyalty
  • Keep your customers informed
  • Increase search engine rankings
  • Build more backlinks
  • Gain more followers on social media
  • Provide details of your products or services

For the most part, the purpose of online marketing is to reach more customers and increase your web presence. Blogging remains one of the most effective ways to achieve this. It can build customer loyalty and allow you to explain how to use your products or services. Blogging also gives you something to share through your social media profiles.

Nowadays, most businesses use blogging as a part of their online marketing strategy. If you are not following suit, your competition will have an edge on you. That is why I recommend updating your blog at least once per month. If you have the resources, blogging on a weekly basis is even more beneficial.

You may also want to consider setting up a regular blogging schedule. When visitors get used to the day of the week that you post your blogs, they are more likely to check back and take a look at your latest post. Repeat traffic can be difficult to achieve, so take advantage of this and the other benefits of keeping your blog active.

Updating Old Content

Along with regular blog posting, pay attention to the content on your business web pages, such as your home, about, services, and product pages. Watch out for any content on your site which would expose the fact that it hasn’t been updated in a long while. In addition to adding new blog articles on a regular schedule, consider updating your old content. Go through the major web pages of your site and look for references to products, services, or events that are no longer relevant.

If you come across old content, give it an update. You may even want to think about updating your web pages on occasion. Rewrite some of the content on a web page. Whenever your website is updated, your sitemap should be updated as well. The time stamp that appears in your sitemap is used by search engines to determine the age of web page and blog articles.

Make Sure Your Blog is Active

Having a blog is a great way to increase website traffic and reach more customers. Visitors are more likely to share relevant content with their friends and family on social media. Blogging on a regular basis can increase your search engine rankings and draw more people to your website. With a quality blog and regularly posting, you can start increasing your web presence.

Nowadays, most businesses are using blogs to reach out and connect with their customers. Blogs make up a large portion of the webpages available online and they are here to stay. So, is blogging really necessary for your business? Yes, if you want to make the most of online marketing and reach as many potential customers as possible.

To put it simply, there is no real reason for a visitor share a random page from a business website. Blogging also helps you establish you and your business as a voice of authority and a leader in the specific niche that you are focused on. Write about what you know. How often you post is going to be up to you, but I’ve found that posting a new article at least once per week is the most effective way to benefit from blogging. Gaining repeat visitors is one of the most difficult parts of online marketing. Posting on a consistent basis also provides a bonus to your search engine optimization. It shows Google and other search engines that your website is updated regularly and is likely to contain relevant information.

How Should You Promote Your Blog Posts?

There are many different options and techniques for promoting your blog posts. Every time you post a new blog article, a link should be shared to your social media profiles. This lets your social media followers know when a new article is posted, so you again gain that repeat traffic. Share your posts to Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Also, make sure that your blog page contains links to your social media profiles. Your visitors should not have to search to find your social media profiles. And after reading a helpful article, they be more likely to start following you on Facebook or Twitter.

What Should You Blog About?

The topics of your blog articles will depend on your industry and your niche. Having a niche category within an industry helps you reach a target audience without as much competition. For my own business, I try to come up with a list of topics that I would like to discuss. Create a list and from there you can pick and choose what topics you want to cover during any particular week. Try to branch out and offer a wide range of blog articles, while ensuring you are still covering information that is relevant to your niche category. It’s also a good idea to post articles that are at least 500 words in length. This gives you enough room to create a helpful article, which can be expanded upon as needed

Do you hate spam? I’m sure you probably do and you are not alone. Businesses have been using targeted email lists since the beginning of the internet. It is a commonly used method for promoting a business, but there can be a fine line between sending out informative emails and sending out spam.

Using an opt in email list, you can keep your customers up-to-date with your latest products, services, or promotional sales. Overall, it’s a great way to keep your customers informed, when used correctly; however, if you do not follow proper email techniques, you may drive your existing and potential customers away. The last thing you want to do with any email list is end up unintentionally spamming your potential customers. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you start planning your targeted email campaign:

  • Only use a curated list (create your own list)
  • Allow people to opt in and opt out of your email list
  • Include registration through social media
  • Provide free giveaways and require opting into your email list
  • Do not purchase email lists from a third-party
  • Avoid sending out too many emails

Acquiring Registered Users

Your email list should be created through an opt in setup, where users that choose to receive emails from you sign up to be added to your email list. There are many different ways to acquire new registrations to your list. You could provide giveaways, such as training videos or instructional PDFs, promote your business through social media, or include a registration/subscription option on your website. In fact, you may even want to combine different methods of acquiring users or consider creating multiple email lists focused on various categories of products or services.

Do Not Purchase Email Lists

During your search for targeted email campaign info, you may have come across websites that offer to sell you email lists. Here is why buying email lists is a bad idea:

  • These people did not give you permission to send them emails
  • You have no relationship with these people
  • They could report your brand as a spam contributor
  • Your brand will get a bad reputation and bad word of mouth

This is never a good idea, as you never know whether these customers have any interest in your specific products or services. These lists are typically sold and passed around various groups and businesses without the consent of the names and email addresses on the list. Your best bet is to skip these lists all together and develop your own curated list.

Avoid Sending Out Too Many Emails

Having an opt in email list is the perfect opportunity for direct sales and marketing. You are reaching out to people that chose to receive emails from you, but you may want to avoid sending out too many emails. For example, a customer that receives an email from you several times a day might eventually think of your emails as spam, and request to be removed from your list. Setup an email schedule, such as once per week or every two weeks. You should also pick a day of the week for sending out your emails. Customers will come to expect emails from your business on these days and know to look out for them.

Promoting Products or Services

The main goal of any marketing material should be to inform and educate your potential customers. The same is true with sending out emails; though, you have the option to gear your email content more towards promoting products or services. Remember, the people on your email list chose to signup to receive emails. While you shouldn’t throw a heavy sales pitch at the people on your email list, you can offer informative details about a specific product or service. I like to use an 80/20 rule when sending emails to my list.

Using Email Campaign Software

Even though it is possible to manage a reasonably sized email list without the need for additional software, there are quite a few programs out there that are designed for the management and scheduling of an opt in email list. Some of these programs will even help you create registration options, whether you want to include a signup form on your website, in a social media post, or as part of a giveaway. These programs can be especially useful when managing multiple lists or lists that contain hundreds of emails. Several of these email campaign programs are available for free, with a limit on the number of emails in a list, while other programs may require a monthly fee.

The Bottom Line

If you pay attention to how you go about acquiring names and emails for your targeted email list, you should have no problem avoiding spamming your list. Allow people to opt in and opt out of your email list, create a schedule for sending out emails, and consider what information you want to include in your emails. Basically, think about what you would do when you receive emails from a business. How often do you receive them? What type of content do they contain? Creating a targeted email list does not have to be a complicated process, just take the time to use this marketing technique wisely.

When a user searches for a specific keyword, search engines then provide them with a list of websites that, according to their search engine algorithms, the user will find most relevant. Above all else, content is the number one priority when it comes to SEO. Search engines want to provide users with information that they will actually find useful.

Another aspect of SEO includes focusing on a specific keyword or keyword phrase throughout the content of a web page or blog article, while making sure that the keyword appears in the content in a natural way and is not over-used.

Those are just a couple of the main parts involved in good SEO; though, you or your web development team may also seek out quality backlinks, add meta data to a page or post, and submit sitemaps to search engines.

There are a lot of options when planning social media posting. A general rule that I use for all forms of marketing is the 80/20 rule. Email marketing can be incredibly effective, as long as you take care not to spam your potential customers. These are not unsolicited emails. The people that opt-in to your email list should perceive a real value in what you send them, otherwise, they may be likely to send your emails to the spam folder or request to be removed from your email list. Try to avoid pressure selling or filling up your target audience’s inbox with constant emails. As with any other content that is delivered through your business, ensure you are sending out useful information.

Offering Free Giveaways

Offering stuff for free has been a staple of marketing and promotion since businesses first began promoting themselves. People enjoy receiving free items and are more likely to visit a business, either in-person or online, when they have received a free giveaway. This same technique can be used online, by offering giveaways that have a real value for the type of customer that you want to attract. This can include free PDFs, instructional videos, or even free services. Requiring users to opt-in to your email list before receiving the free gift is also a great way to start building your targeted email list.

Integrity, Openness, and Honesty

Consumers are intelligent and know the difference between informative content and pressure selling. Remain open and honest with your customers.
